Improve your search engine optimisation results
Here are a few easy-to-do tweaks to your website that will improve your your visitors' experience (potential clients and spiders):
- Be sure links within your website use your keyword phrase, so if you are taking your reader to a page on blue widgets then create the hyperlink from "blue widgets" instead of a "Click here" link;
- Spiders can only crawl text, so make full use of ALT text on images. Try using keywords and keyword phrases if possible, but do make sure they are used appropriately. Some experts recommend using the words "image" or "picture" in ALT descriptions and captions;
- It is worth considering renaming an image with a one word description eg bluewidget.jpg rather than P0123456.jpg;
- Search engines want natural language content, so be very careful how you include keywords and phrases. Spiders are able to detect over use and most importantly, if your language is unnatural you will drive away the reader you have just encouraged to your website;
- If you include a video, try to ensure you place it within relevant text. Search engines look at surrounding content to define the usefulness;
- If you are involved in education it is worth creating links with .edu domains, hyperlinks from them are given weight by the search engines. Look for free, reciprocal or even sponsored links from non-profit .edu sites.
